Ronald M. Gold is an ASCAP composer and publisher, a graduate of the Mannes College, and was the Artistic Director of the 1977-80 CETA Jewish Music Community at the American Jewish Congress.

The “Million Dollar Annual Program” was the first in U.S. history devoted to the composition, performance, and cataloging of Jewish music and dance in the history of the United States. It was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor and the New York Department of Cultural Affairs.

DERIVATION AND INSPIRATION of the TONE POEM -

"BERNIE'S JOURNEY"

It became quite clear to the composer in January and February 2016 that Bernie Sanders, an unknown Socialist Senator from Vermont, the poorest state in the United States . . . was the fountainhead for new ideas to transform the United States back into the "great dynamo" it was in the mid 20th Century.

He devised and expounded on new ideas to propel the American Ideal forward. America was stuck in a rut. Its inventiveness and drive seemed a thing of the past.

Bernie came up with bold plans . . . free Higher Education . . . a Bold Increase to the Minimum Wage . . . a plan to eliminate the massive and mounting National Incarceration of Black Men and Women . . . an attack on Prescription Drug Companies . . . an attack on the Banks and on Wall Street . . . an attack on NAFTA . . . on "free trade agreements" which eliminated over 5 million American jobs since the early 1990's . . . an attack on The Special Interests . . .the 1% . . . He noted that the Rich who were getting Richer . . .

He called for the Return of the Vanished and Vanquished Middle Class . . . He called for massive Tax Reform . . . He demanded Free Government Health Care, etc.

Even though he "threw in the towel" and gave up fighting for the Presidential Nomination of his "newly adopted" Democratic Party at the Philadelphia Democratic Convention . . . he established a revolutionary grass roots Campaign and Candidacy . . . . financed by the American people.

His is a phenomenon in national American politics . . . a continuing American success story.

The journey has been long . . . but the journey has just begun . . . and his influence can be felt in all political circles throughout America. He changed the course of history and the flow of ideas. That is why this Tone Poem was written, in the hope that this music will inspire greater ideas yet to come.

DERIVATION AND INSPIRATION of the TONE POEM -

"EXIT US!"

"For 2 thousand years the JEWS have been forcibly expelled or have voluntarily or involuntarily chosen to leave (with great sadness and dread) from many many places . . . ISRAEL, SPAIN, ENGLAND, POLAND, LITHUANIA,RUSSIA, UKRAINE, etc.

This piece tries to combine the great 2-millennial upheaval . . . the "leaving from and the returning" to the Land of Israel . . . using snippets of Ernest Gold's theme from the 1960 EXODUS, original phrases by RONALD GOLD, as well as many musical leitmotifs, chromatics, modes, rhythms, cross-rhythms and riffs the Jews have devised, invented, contrived, borrowed or attached to "accompany" their brutal cultural odyssey through the ages, for which they were brutally mistreated and shunted into the "dustbin of history."

The goal, preceding and following each and every EXIT, was their extermination. However, they did leave. In the end, as Hannah Arendt noted ironically in EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM . . . "YOU DID THIS TO US, AND WE DO THIS TO YOU" (The Judgement of Eichmann).

EXIT US! is a "sound mirror" of this unfolding irony, illustrating with music the passion, mystery, sadness, heartbreak and triumph of the tragic journey.

The Jews are still around, and a lot of their deadly enemies are gone . . . . and maybe, just maybe . . . the EXIT or the EXODUS won't be necessary from now on . . . only time will tell.
